Australian Passport Step by Step: Everything No One Tells You

If you need a new Australian passport or want to renew the one you already have, the process can be done within Australia easily by following these steps. If you are outside the country, there is a different procedure, which you can check under Applications from Outside Australia.
Who Can Apply for a Passport?
Only Australian citizens can apply for a passport. Not everyone born in Australia is automatically a citizen, so you must be able to prove your citizenship with a valid certificate. If you are not a citizen, there are other travel documents available.
The standard waiting time is approximately 6 weeks from the day you submit your application.
Step 1: Gather Your Documents and Photos.
You will need:
A document proving your Australian citizenship (birth certificate or citizenship certificate).
A photo ID with your signature and current address.
Proof of any name or gender changes, if applicable.
2 passport-sized photos that meet the official guidelines.

All documents must be in English or officially translated by an approved service.
Step 2: Find Your Referee or Guarantor.
If completing the form online: you need a referee who can confirm your identity if requested.
If completing the form on paper: you need a guarantor who signs your application and your passport photo according to the instructions.
The guarantor or referee must be an adult Australian citizen, not an immediate family member, and must either hold a valid passport or have been on the electoral roll for at least 12 months.
Step 3: Complete the Application Form.
Online: fill out the form, print it, and take it to an Australia Post office with all your documents.
Paper: collect the green form at a post office, complete it, and prepare your documents.
Step 4: Lodge and Pay.
Submit everything in person at Australia Post and pay the applicable fee.

Your current passport will be cancelled when you apply for a new one, and any remaining validity will not be transferred.

Step 5: Wait for Your Passport.
The standard processing time is 6 weeks, but you can choose:
Priority Service: 2 business days.
Fast Track: 5 business days.
Your passport will be sent by registered mail, with email and SMS notifications. You can also collect it in person if you need it earlier.
With this guide, the process of applying for or renewing your Australian passport will be much clearer and faster. Make sure you have all your documents ready and follow each step carefully to avoid delays.
