Secure your future employment in Australia with the White Card: Complete guide to obtaining it

ree

If you are looking for job opportunities in Australia and are interested in the construction sector, obtaining the White Card is essential. In this article, we will provide all the information you need to apply for your White Card and step into the exciting world of construction in the Aussie nation.

What is the White Card?

The White Card is a safety card that certifies you have successfully completed workplace health and safety training for the construction industry. This card is mandatory to work in any activity related to construction in Australia, including civil engineering, architecture, site supervision, plumbing, painting, cleaning, air conditioning installation, and many more.

Requirements to Obtain the White Card

Before applying for your White Card, make sure you meet the following requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years old.

  • Provide a valid identification.

  • Have an intermediate level of English (to communicate effectively).

  • Obtain a Unique Student Identifier (USI).

  • Have the necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the practical part of the course.

The USI is a unique identification number assigned to students in Australia. You will need it to obtain higher education qualifications and to access your training records and results.

The PPE can be purchased at any hardware store. The full kit costs around 150 AUD and includes all required personal safety items, such as a helmet, safety boots, vest, gloves, protective glasses, and ear protection.

White Card Course

Once you meet the requirements, you must complete a construction industry safety training course to obtain your White Card. There are two ways to do this: in person or online.

Before deciding on a modality, it is important to know that there are many RTOs (Registered Training Organisations) where you can take the course. You must choose one that is valid in your state—even if you decide to take it online.

For example, in Queensland and New South Wales, you can only work in construction with a White Card obtained through a face-to-face course. However, the online course offers convenience and allows you to take the time to translate anything you don’t fully understand, depending on your English level and familiarity with the Aussie accent.

Face-to-Face White Card Course

The in-person course is delivered by accredited training centres and usually lasts about 6 hours. During the training, you will receive both theoretical and practical instruction on safety policies, health regulations, laws, and procedures applicable to the construction industry in Australia.

At the end of the course, you will need to carefully review the study material provided by the RTO and pass an assessment (based on images) to obtain your White Card. Once approved, you will receive a temporary card that allows you to work while waiting for your official card to arrive by post.

The White Card obtained through face-to-face training is generally valid across all states, but it is always wise to double-check regulations before paying, as rules may change.

Online White Card Course

If you prefer the online option, there are accredited platforms that offer this alternative. Online courses allow you to progress at your own pace, and the duration depends on how much time you dedicate.

During the course, you will have access to theory materials and will need to pass an assessment consisting of a 150-question quiz to demonstrate your knowledge of construction safety. At the end, you will either receive a phone call to verify your identity or be required to submit a video showing you correctly using your PPE.

Upon completion and passing all assessments, you will receive a virtual temporary card, and your physical White Card will be mailed to you a few days later.

How to Find a White Card Course

Government websites in each state provide guidance on courses, work licences, and job opportunities in Australia, whether in construction or other sectors. For instance, the NSW state website offers information about in-person courses, requirements, and steps to obtain licences like the White Card.

One of the most recognised RTOs is Express Online Training, whose certification is valid across almost the entire country. Other popular options include:

  • Edway

  • TAFE NSW

  • Melbourne Polytechnic

How Much Does It Cost?

  • In-person courses: between 70 and 150 AUD (or more, depending on the provider and location).

  • Online courses: between 50 and 100 AUD (or more).

Validity and Renewal of the White Card

The certificate you receive after completing the training is valid for 60 days while you wait for your physical White Card, which usually arrives within one month.

The White Card itself does not expire unless you stop working in the construction industry for more than two consecutive years. If you lose your card, you don’t need to retake the course; the RTO that certified you can provide a replacement upon request (for a fee).

Jobs You Can Do with the White Card

The White Card gives you access to a wide range of jobs in the Australian construction sector. By law, this includes any activity related to altering, renovating, repairing, maintaining, demolishing, or dismantling buildings or structures.
