What to consider before driving in Australia

If you are planning to come to Australia or if you are already here and you want to clear doubts about how and what you need to drive, you will love this note.

Before you start, keep in mind that:

  1. First, it’s essential to be clear about where you’re going because depending on the state you’re in, the rules will vary. If you want to know in detail what rules apply in your state, visit the official source here.

  2. Usually, you can drive with your home country license if you come in a short period (less than 3 months). If the document is not in English, all you will need is an official translation. Always accompany the translation with the original document.

  3. NAATI (National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters) translations are accepted in most states, except for NSW. However, you should constantly be checking the rule as it can vary at any time.

  4. With the NAATI translation of your license, you can sign up to work at Uber Eats, no matter where in Australia you are.

  5. If you are going to be in Australia for more than 3 months, you will most likely need to apply for an Australian driver’s license after this period.

  6. In Australia, you drive with a points system, which means that you lose points as you commit infractions. If your points reach a maximum amount, you can have your license suspended and even revoked.

  7. If you’ve never had a driver’s license and you want to get it for the first time in Australia, the process to acquire it can be done through one of the many driving training agencies.

  8. One of the advantages of getting a driver’s license in Australia is that as you learn, you are given a "driver’s license" with different letters, which determine your driving level.

  9. As a tip, when you start driving in Australia, it’s best to get advice from a friend or acquaintance who has experience in this, to give you recommendations and basic rules about what should and shouldn’t be done in Australia.
