Entrelingo, globally valid official translations

Certified official translations are valid anywhere in the world; you only have to pay special attention to the requirements of the entity requesting the translation.

If you have been asked to translate your documents for a procedure abroad and are still unsure if an official translation will help you, this article may interest you.

What is an official translation?

An official translation is made of a document that has been issued in a country (A) so that its holder can exercise rights or demonstrate qualities in another country (B) whose official language is different from that of country A, with the purpose that it has legal effects (i.e., before the law) in country B. An example of this may be a birth registration translated from Spanish into English to be submitted to the respective authority in Australia to apply for the nationality of a newly adopted minor.

How do you know if it’s an official translation?

Official translations are also known as certified, legal, or sworn translations. Any official translation must be done by an official translator, a translator whose ability to translate between two languages has been demonstrated by an Official Translation and Interpretation Examination and certified by the official entity in charge according to their country of origin. In Colombia, for example, certification bodies are the Ministry of Justice, the National University, and the University of Antioquia.

In which countries is my official translation valid?

Certified official translations are valid anywhere in the world; you only have to pay special attention to the requirements of the entity requesting the translation. For example, if they ask you for an apostille, authentication, or special certificate. Remember that each organisation or department has its requirements about what kind of translations are accepted. Be sure to ask the organisation that requested the translation if your translator should have any special certification.
